I invite you to attend this year’s David Clarke Memorial Lecture on October 29 at 5.30 at the University of Melbourne. I was really pleased to be invited to give the lecture as David was such a valued colleague and friend.
Exploring New Understandings of Teaching and Learning Science and Maths
Current policies in science and mathematics education are limited by their focus on a single prescribed pedagogy, within a narrow theoretical base. This lecture uses Professor David Clarke’s advocacy of ‘complementary accounts’ to argue that contemporary understandings of learning and teaching imply the need for multiple theoretical perspectives to inform effective practices.
Professor Russell Tytler draws on research into practice-based, interdisciplinary approaches to science and mathematics framed through semiotic and aesthetic, disciplinary literacy perspectives. This includes research from the Science of Learning Classroom, designed to produce comprehensive data to accommodate multiple interpretive accounts.
This presentation will argue that such perspectives offer rich possibilities for fostering the important curriculum capabilities of critical and creative thinking
I hope to see you there. The lecture will be recorded and shared. You can register at: https://go.unimelb.edu.au/x23p
