This program involves a range of justice and equity themes including theorising and innovative approaches to gender and STEM, indigenous knowledges and decolonizing practices.
Gender and STEM
MSET-Ed researchers are pursuing several projects focused on justice and equity in mathematics and science and STEM education generally. A number of funded projects involve explorations of gender and STEM, including literature reviews, case studies, intervention projects, and shape national conversations through national and local forums, partnerships and publication. Foci for this work include participation of girls in STEM, factors affecting participation in school science and mathematics and STEM careers, and non-binary framings of gender equity.
Decolonizing Practices
MSET-Ed researchers are increasingly involved in exploring decolonizing practices in environmental and science education, working with indigenous colleagues to explore the contributions of indigenous knowledges and practices in addressing socio-ecological challenges and to widening the scope and practice of science education in schools.
Low SES Partnerships
As part of this social justice agenda, MSET-Ed researchers’ work has encompassed multiple projects specifically involving partnerships with teachers and schools in low SES areas.
